5 tips for schools using the Gather My Crew app

The Gather My Crew app is a simple and powerful way for schools to coordinate practical support for families going through a tough time. A school representative can set up an account and get a crew together quickly. Here are 5 things to keep in mind.

1. Always check with the family first

No crew gets set up without the family’s permission. Have a simple conversation. Let them know your school regularly coordinates this kind of support for families who could use a hand through a tough time and ask if they’d like to have a crew set up for them. Reassure them that they’re in control of the tasks that get listed, who gets invited, and who sees what.

2. Check whether they already have a crew

They might already have a Gather My Crew account set up by someone in another part of their life. If they do, offer to join it rather than starting a new one. If they don’t, ask whether they’d like to set the crew up themselves, whether they have someone they’d like to nominate to do it for them, or if they’re happy for your school representative to do it.

3. Nominate a Captain and a couple of Admins

If the family would like help setting things up, nominate a school representative to be the Captain. The Captain creates the account, builds the task list, and invites the crew. You can also add a couple of admins who have the same permissions. It might be an idea to allocate these roles to close friends of the family and of course the family themselves.

4. Think beyond the school gate

Transport to and from school and lunchbox fillers are a great place to start. But the school community has so much more to offer. Meals, grocery runs, help around the house, after school playdates, lifts to after school activities. Make sure the task list reflects the full picture of what a family needs, not just what happens during school hours.

5. Make it part of school culture

The schools that do this best are the ones that treat it as standard practice. A family is doing it tough, so the school community pulls together. No fuss, no fanfare. Just people looking out for each other. The more normal it becomes, the easier it is for families to say yes to help.
