A Professional Education Program for Cancer Nurses
Introduction
Cancer treatment does not happen in hospitals alone.
Every day, patients rely on partners, family, friends and communities for the practical and emotional support that helps them manage treatment and everyday life.
This informal care is essential to comprehensive cancer care. Yet despite its importance, it often remains invisible within healthcare. Clinicians routinely assess symptoms, nutrition and distress, but rarely assess the strength or sustainability of the support patients rely on at home.
Too often, responsibility falls to one primary carer, even when others are willing to help.
This education program introduces a different approach.
Coordinated Informal Care helps patients and families organise a wider network of support, sharing the responsibilities of caring across more people.
Through an introduction and five learning modules, participants will explore:
Importantly, this is not about asking cancer nurses to become community coordinators.
It is about giving nurses the knowledge, confidence and practical tools to recognise when support may be vulnerable, start conversations, connect patients with resources and revisit their needs throughout treatment.
Because great cancer care doesn’t stop at the hospital doors.
