Behind every person in need, there is often a carer quietly carrying the daily load. Carers juggle appointments, medications, emotions, logistics, and worry, often while trying to keep life running for everyone else. Their role can be invisible, especially when all attention is focused on the person who is unwell.
Carers often put their own needs last. Many feel guilty stepping away, even briefly, or worry that asking for help makes them seem ungrateful or incapable. Over time, this constant holding can lead to exhaustion, isolation, and burnout.
Supporting the carer is not an extra. It is essential. When carers are supported, they are better able to keep going, and the whole household benefits.
Here’s what helps:
Give them time out.
Offer to do something that is just for them, like going to the movies, taking a walk, sitting in a café, or booking a massage. Even short breaks can help carers reset and breathe.
Encourage support for them too.
Remind them that it is okay to post tasks in the app that support their needs, not just the person they are caring for. Their wellbeing matters.
Offer respite at home.
Staying with the person in need for a few hours can allow the carer to truly switch off without worry. Knowing someone they trust is there makes a big difference.
Check in with them directly.
When you ask how things are going, include them too. A simple “How are you doing?” can help carers feel seen, not just useful.
Supporting the carer supports the whole household. 💛
